The Santa Fe Symphony: Season Opener

Praised by The Baltimore Sun for her “impeccable technique, deeply expressive phrasing, and poetic weight,” Sirena Huang is one of her generation’s most celebrated violinists. Performing the famous and exquisite “Bach Double,” this 2017 winner of the Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition will be joined by none other than Elmar Oliveira, the first violinist to ever receive the coveted Avery Fisher Prize and the only American violinist to win the Gold Medal at Moscow’s Tchaikovsky International Competition in 1978. Then, Sirena Huang takes center stage to showcase her supreme talent with Barber’s spellbinding Violin Concerto, so technically challenging in the final movement that Barber himself described it as “unplayable.” And finally, Tchaikovsky’s most celebrated masterpiece, his intensely personal and final symphony, the passionate Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique.”Arvo Pärt connects the dots between Classical and Romantic in this exceptional program which opens with what many consider one of the finest in the string quintet repertoire, Mozart’s remarkable 515—among the very greatest of his chamber music masterpieces. Then, transforming us to another realm is Pärt’s enigmatic Summa for String Quartet, originally written for a capella voices. And in finale, Mendelssohn. Recognized as nineteenth-century’s “Second Mozart,” we round out the afternoon with his magically passionate String Quintet No. 2.
